What is a starseed?

A starseed is a cosmic soul on assignment here on Earth: a being whose origins, many teachers believe, lie among the stars, and who often feels out of place on Gaia.

A soul from elsewhere, here on purpose

At its heart, the starseed idea is simple. Some souls, the teachings say, did not begin their journey on Earth. They come from other star systems, other dimensions, or straight from Source. They chose to be born human at this moment in Earth’s story, usually to help, to lift the collective atmosphere, or simply to be a frequency of love in a place that needs it.

Coming here has a price. In nearly every version of the story, a starseed forgets where they came from when they arrive. Ra calls this the forgetting; many people call it the veil. What is left is a feeling: a homesickness, a sense of being a stranger, a longing for gentleness and truth, and a pull toward the stars.

For many people, finding the word starseed is the moment that feeling finally has a name.

A short history

Where the idea comes from

The word is modern, but it gathers threads from several decades of New Age teaching. Here is how the story unfolded, with credit given where it is due.

  1. 1967–1968Author Brad Steiger begins research into people reporting mystical and otherworldly experiences, and writes his “Star People” questionnaire in 1968.
  2. 1976In Gods of Aquarius, Steiger introduces the idea of Star People, humans he described as coming from a special lineage linked to visits by extraterrestrials.
  3. 1979Ruth Montgomery’s Strangers Among Us popularizes the idea of walk-ins.
  4. 1981Brad and Francie Steiger publish The Star People. The same year, the Ra / Law of One sessions begin through L/L Research, describing wanderers: souls from higher “densities” who incarnate here to serve.
  5. 1987Steiger refines his questionnaire with Sherry Hansen Steiger. He reports that roughly 30,000 people eventually returned it.
  6. 1989–1992The Prism of Lyra (Lyssa Royal & Keith Priest) maps a “galactic family” of star origins. Barbara Marciniak’s Bringers of the Dawn speaks of the “Family of Light.” Solara’s 11:11 Doorway gathers the “Star-Borne.”
  7. 1990s–2010sDolores Cannon, through thousands of hypnosis sessions, describes the Three Waves of Volunteers, souls who answered a call to help Earth.
  8. TodayTeachers such as Jamye Price and Matías De Stefano speak of ascension, light language and remembering, and a global community of starseeds keeps finding one another.

A soul believed to originate beyond Earth, now living a human life. The umbrella term used on this site.
Star People / Star-Borne
Brad Steiger’s term, from the 1970s and 80s; Solara spoke of the “Star-Borne” around the 11:11 Doorway.

Dolores Cannon’s word for souls who answered the call to come to Earth and help, arriving in three “waves.”

Lightworker
A broader word for anyone devoted to raising consciousness, whether or not they feel a star origin.
Walk-in
